The ISDC is divided into functional branches which represent the professional fields required to support the ISDC’s mission.

Branches provide training and qualification structures for crew careers and typically include a number of specialisations which represent discrete (usually technical) disciplines within that branch.

Branches are represented aboard vessels by the ship's departments, which form part of the vessel's chain of command.
